John and Kate plus 8 Blog #7 (Thursday, April 9, 2009))

I do not think its right to include children in reality shows only because they should not have to grow up with the influences of the media, and celebrity world. They deserve the right to grow up as kids to make mistakes and not have to worry about being perfect on camera, and have them in their faces for their childhood when they deserve to have one. To play with their friends, play in the playground, and have the experience to see a normal childhood which they will now never know.

The success of shows like John and Kate plus 8 is because it’s different and intriguing. People are interested in things that are not that normal like someone having that amount of children. It’s successful because of the lack of drama, and the fact that it seems so simple, and that it’s not hard to have cameras in your face for every hour of the day. People don’t see those side affects that they might see which is why this show is so successful because to people those tiffs or little tiny problems are as bad as it gets.

This show does however show an unrealistic view that it is easy to raise a large family. I think the producers are stupid to not show the true thing and in my opinion the truth on this show might actually be more successful. People these days love the drama, the things that are not realistic in their minds but somehow someone in this world is doing it. Either way there will be people viewing this segment, but it might be more truthful and maybe even more successful if they were to show the truth. People might actually see it is a very hard thing to raise one child let a lone 8. Motherhood is the hardest thing in life, it is a job that will consume your life forever, and to have more than one little life to take care is the most intense complicated and hardest job out there. And these producers should not be giving false implication that it is easy.

The Truman Show (Tuesday, April 28, 2009)

The show is based on Truman and his "real" life as they put it. His life was real based on the facts that he controlled his own emotions and how he interacted with other people. The show was very successful in the "phonyness" because everything on the show is fake, from his wife, his job, even someone who drove a bus. But because of all of the obstacles and speed bumps along the way Truman Burbank still finds himself which is the main goal in life.

Growing up, having the experiences which are like your childhood, highschool, even having a high school sweetheart are all things that make someone who they are. Those actions and events might be fake and paid actors but the reality to him was real, which will affect his life and daily decisions. Truman finds himself in the end, and if his life was not real then he would be a part of this TV show for the rest of his life. But he falls in love, when they remove the girl who lives in Figi, they remove her from the show because they fall in love and she was going to reveal the truth.

If his life was fake he wouldn't care that he married someone that was assigned to marry him, instead he is going to Figi to find his women. All of his reactions towards anything daily were all instinct, and what he thought was right and wrong are not made up which is a big part of a life lesson to be true to yourself, and be who you are which is another reason and proof that his life is real. It might only be paid actors, and "phony" crisis's but they are real to him, he lives his everyday life thinking that this is his life, he wasn't paid to do anything it was a show based on him and his life. He is living the life that was delt to him, which is what any one person in the world is doing. God gave you the lives you are living, his might not be relatively the same because his is more man made but still the same point, he is living the life he was given being himself, loving who he wants to love, and going after his dreams which is to go to Figi to get this women.
He conquers his fear of water which is something else that people in the world do as they live through the days, and get older they grow up, grow out of their fears and start living their life. There all steps of a journey to he end, where all they are happy, and become the person they strive their entire life to become.

Truman does live a ‘real’ life, he is living breathing air, and is experiencing real life events. He is a person living the life that was giving to him the best he can like anyone else. He lives his life to find himself which is what everyone in this world strives to do, and in the end he does, and he gets to exactly where he wants to be. Therefore, his life is real, and he is doing a really good job on living it.

Direct Advertisments Blog2 (Friday, February 13, 2009)

Over the past unit I have become much more aware of advertisements in movies and TV shows. I find myself randomly looking for advertisements around where I don't think I'll see any, and I'll see them. It is as if the media has made it so that every where we go whatever we read whether it be magazines, if we listen to the radio or see television shows or even see it on the internet they all have advertisements. These make us think we want or need to have these products for whatever reason it may be.
In the movie Die Another Day there were many times when product placement was used. Also a part from Wayne's World which made fun of product placement which was entertaining and showed how often we see it in our daily lives, and how much it really does affect everything we see day-to-day. Seeing James Bond with an expensive brand of a watch may make him seem a little more normal and unexciting, but the fact that he is James Bond makes people somehow want what he has. If you wanted to be like him, you want what he has, and a watch is something you can actually buy and own.
Product placement is a good idea and it is a good way for companies to promote their products. I do think it effects peoples decisions when it comes to purchasing products depending on age, gender and even if they have a job or not. Adolescents usually have jobs so they are making money and think you know I got money to spare why shouldn't I buy this product.
People dislike commercials and have a tendency to just cut them out and not pay attention or just switch to another channel. Product Placement is not obvious to some people and it is just in our minds when we see them. That is why in my opinion direct advertisements are much more effective then product placement in TV shows, or movies because people get so caught up in the movies they do not see the product being advertised. If companies want people to view their products and actually see them, they’re best bet is to made it up front and obvious.

Celebrity Endorsements (Friday, March 6, 2009)

Some advantages to celebrities shopping in stores or doing endorsements are that people want to be like them, as if to say "they are beautiful and if they use that it must make them that way." People want what they have, so to have celebrities buy there, or endorse products is a huge jump, and a large push to help them along in the industry. Some issues regarding celebrities advertising for certain products is that they are getting paid, they are not showing if the product is actually good, and people just buy it because they are being shown by someone like Vanessa Hudgens.
Celebrity advertisements help boost retail sales because it shows that its not like a no name product, and has money to make good products. We realize that they must have money from people buying their products in order to be paying a celebrity to advertise it. We want to be like them, if it is a very popular celebrity then it goes a long way like Britney Spears, rather then Sarah Michelle Gallagher.
Subconsciously celebrity gossip has an impact on me, and my habits. I don't notice when I would buy things based on them, but i do notice that i always buy magazines, and stuff to catch a glimpse of the celebrity life. I do not consciously notice if my life is affected by celebrity gossip, but i do enjoy hearing or reading about the celebrities that i like. Everyone likes to hear some things its what makes like interesting, we are the ones who made them what they are, so we just all need to realize that. We made them celebrities, we made them famous, its our responsibility so it obviously does affect most of the population of the world.

Vaughn Mills (Wednesday, March 11, 2009)

Vaughn Mills was so much fun, and it was also my first time being there. I defiantly loved the variety and even though it was so much freaking walking to each store there were so many different kinds of seating all around the mall. The food court was very unique with the art displayed and the seating in the area, also it was really cool that there was a food court In the middle and you could cut through to the other side of the mall.
The different sections were like clothing, and different sections of entertainment, food and etc. There were high end sections for stores like Tommy Hilfiger and American Eagle, or sections that have Bluenotes, or Suzy Shier. The stores in the mall do cater to the likes and dislikes of certain audiences, that was a very unique quality that the Vaughn Mills had that some malls in Ontario or anywhere don't. They had stores to target any age, gender, sport, or fishing for that matter which would help with the fact that people could visit this mall alone and accomplish many tasks of the day without having to visit many other places in town.
Some specific stores lure their target audiences by posters, slogans, ads etc. And a big thing is that they are very large stores, they have a lot of the stuff which is also a bonus for some students say who go into Bluenotes, and find things in there that they would not find in say the Oshawa centers Bluenotes.
Whats missing from the stores in the malls are that in my opinion the best target audience are teenagers and there are only a few stores that really cater to their likes. There are a few stores more than say ones to mothers, or fathers, but if they truly wanted to make money targeting them for the stores and to buy things are teenagers. They needed more stores that students shop at, like and or want to shop in.
To make this mall more appealing, or interesting to the public add more things to the mall. More stores, arcades, movies, get new food courts, make it larger and make it fun. Those are all ways to attract teenagers or younger adults. The older adults would love the mall because of its variety and the different places to eat to offer safer eating habits. They could even put a pool, in, or a ice hockey anything is possible there are so many different things that could catch the attention of anyone who shops its only a matter or doing surveys to figure it out, and actually going through with it for the money, and to serve peoples needs and likes more than just a practical shopping center.

Slogans (Wednesday, February 25, 2009)

The week we did on "slogans" of commercials was very affective for me. I learned that a lot of the commercials with the catchy jingles, or very memorable slogans are things what stick with us. Like at one point in time the Pepsi song, was a very popular commercial because that song was so much fun. The handout sheet which we took up as a class were very popular, and the most common ones known to everyone are the bounty paper towels and ones for cars which were very known.
I am very affected by slogans and advertising because I can always remember all of them. I know the entire song to the Dr. Pepper commercial so that tell you something. I remember the catchy songs, that let me remember numbers like the Pizza Pizza number which is connected into the song. This really helps business because people will remember, and when they say where should we order pizza it will be the first thing that comes to my mind. They want to be remembered by the consumers, and have people know them, and that there the best. It is known that the ones with the special slogans are the ones that people like more, almost as if they have the better commerical the most catchier one which obviously means it is the best product. I love some commerical's i think they are entertaining, and i can always remember the good ones.
I will always be affected by advertising and slogans because I enjoy them. I will not let my life be affected by them but i guess you can say i just like to see them, hear them because there entertaining. Advertising's and slogans are a very large part of media, almost all of it in my opinion, and without them then a lot of the products which make the big money because of them wouldn't be even existing anymore. People don't just buy them because of the ads, but because they are good. Like Pepsi, or Downy fabric softener, they are things that are popular because its good. At one point in time they had no advertising, so they have had to build themselves up, which you know means they used to be purchased because it was a great product.
That is why advertising can help a product or do worse for it. Its a toss up for if the consumers like the product or dislike.

Brand Loyalty (Thursday, February 19, 2009)

There are many different brands out there that has earned my loyalty like perfume, jeans, shoes, clothes I wear, even the type of shampoo I wear. These are all things that some people have preference to but that are my preference. I choose the things I like and know. They earned my loyalty because I like them, and I know how they work. Of personal care products, like face wash, or skin cleansers I only use Aveeno. I have very sensitive skin, and it can't be scented. Aveeno is unscented it works, and I love it. It has earned my loyalty because I know it works, I know when to use it, and everything about it. For my phone, it has earned my loyalty because it's a trooper. My Motorola phone has chips, survived in the toilet, sinks full of water, and puddles in the rain. There are some things I might not like about my phone now, but my next phone will still be a Motorola just a different version. Clothes are a big thing that I am very loyal to. I love my clothes which is why I always go back to the stores I buy them in, or whatever label in which the clothes are from. I buy all my clothes from Garage and American Eagle. They are 2 stores I don't think I could live without. They have my favourite sweaters, shirts, coats everything. I am very dedicated to these stores because I love them. Same as bluenotes because its the only place I like jeans which take me a very long process to find a pair I actually like.
There are many products that to me don't matter what brand it is. Things like my socks, as long as there white I do not care where they come from. Different candy is pointless like junk food or plain candy, it all goes to one place and tastes great who cares. Another thing would be personal products like mouth wash, toilet paper, or even my tooth brush. Those things are pointless because you use them so long, or there exactly the same ones just more expensive. No one sees them why would it ever matter. ?
Since discussing all the brand loyalty in class it has not what soever changed my views. I love what I love, and don't what I don't. I still like the things I like, and its not based on what others like. It's my own taste, and it was not affected by others, so these views on brand names mean nothing.
